The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, held a public workshop on August 9, 2012 at the Westside Community Center in Gulfport for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Port of Gulfport Expansion Project, Harrison County, Mississippi. As part of this EIS process, public meetings have been held and comments accepted, and a third-party vendor, Atkins, has been gathering the data needed to prepare the EIS.
This informal workshop included posters of the alternatives that will be evaluated in the EIS; the elements included in the expansion project; the purpose and need for the project; summaries of a recent economic study; and an update on the schedule as to when the draft EIS will be available for public comment. Studies that have been conducted or will be conducted in the next year include: benthic studies; sediment sampling; Gulf sturgeon tagging and monitoring; air and traffic analyses; economic and market studies; and environmental justice. The information from each of these studies will be used to describe the existing conditions of the project area and to determine potential impacts as a result of the expansion projects.
